One of Henley-on-Thames’ most beloved festive traditions is set to return this December, as the Henley Living Advent Calendar brings 24 nights of music, performance and seasonal cheer to the town.
Now a cherished fixture of the local Christmas calendar, the event will once again transform venues across Henley into nightly “doors” that open at 6:15pm to reveal a surprise performance. From musicians and choirs to spoken word, comedy and community groups, each evening offers a unique 20-minute burst of entertainment designed to bring people together during the run-up to Christmas.
A Refresh Behind the Scenes
This year marks a gentle evolution for the event, with Henley Town Council stepping in to support the organisation of the month-long programme. Despite the behind-the-scenes refresh, the spirit of the tradition remains very much intact, with local venues taking an even more active role in hosting and shaping each evening’s performance.
A Mix of Returning Favourites and New Acts
While the line-up is kept under tight wraps until each “door” opens, organisers promise a blend of familiar faces and exciting newcomers. Expect a variety of styles—from classical and jazz to festive songs and spoken word—ensuring there’s something to delight every audience.
Supporting 24 Local Charities
At the heart of the Living Advent Calendar is its commitment to local good causes. Each night will raise funds for a different charity through collections, raffles and onsite donations, offering residents and visitors a chance to enjoy festive entertainment while giving back to the community.
With 24 venues involved—from pubs and churches to cultural spaces and community hubs—the event also invites participants to explore Henley in a fresh and festive way throughout December.
The final night on 24 December at St Mary’s Church will feature a festive flourish: the Mayor’s charity auction, including the much-anticipated bidding for his famous shirt!
Thanks to the Supporters
Organisers extend warm thanks to the sponsors whose generosity makes the Living Advent Calendar possible, including The Henley Business Partnership, Philip Booth Esq Estate Agent, Blue Peak, Blandy & Blandy and The Henley Standard, as well as the many venues, performers, partners and volunteers involved.
