Henley’s Great Big Green Week Returns with a Splash of Nature and Action

Henley-on-Thames is gearing up for a week-long celebration of environmental consciousness and community action as the Great Big Green Week returns from June 8th to June 16th. Organized by Greener Henley and a host of partners, the event promises an exciting array of activities aimed at fostering discussions, inspiring change, and nurturing a deeper connection with nature.

The festivities kick off on Saturday, June 8th, with the Nature Discovery Day at Mill Meadows, offering a plethora of engaging activities for all ages. From guided walks to bug hunts, attendees will have the opportunity to explore the rich biodiversity of the area and interact with local conservation groups and expert naturalists. Additionally, visitors can immerse themselves in the world of wildlife photography and even take home native wildflower seeds to contribute to Greener Henley’s ‘Nature Squared’ campaign.

Meanwhile, in the heart of town, Pavilion Foods will host a tantalizing Plant vs Beef Burger Taste Test, inviting food enthusiasts to weigh in on their preferred patty. The culinary exploration continues with The Gardening Drawing Club at Henley Library, where families can blend artistry with gardening in a creative session.

Sunday, June 9th, sees a call to action with the Paddleboard River Clean led by Warriors on Waste and Go With The Flo paddleboarding, followed by a thought-provoking Screening of “Elephant Mother” at the Regal Picturehouse cinema, offering insights into the challenges facing conservationists.

Throughout the week, attendees can delve into various discussions and workshops, including “Our Moral Obligation? Faith, Climate & Displacement” and “In Our Hands: Our Climate Future“, featuring esteemed speakers and experts. The Henley Library will also host a Poetry Reading session showcasing entries from the Greener Henley Poetry Competition, echoing the theme of ‘Tread Gently on the Earth’.

Wednesday night promises a cinematic treat with a special preview screening of “Wilding” at the Regal Picturehouse cinema, followed by an expert panel discussion.

Business owners are encouraged to participate in the Greening Your Business workshop at the River & Rowing Museum on Thursday, June 13th, offering insights into sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and the bottom line.

As the week draws to a close, the Badgemore School Open Gardens event invites visitors to explore lush green spaces and gain inspiration for their own gardening endeavors.

In addition to these exciting events, families can enjoy a week-long Scavenger Hunt and participate in Henley’s Big Green Read, selecting from a curated list of enlightening books on nature.
